Heinrich Votes To Boost American Innovation In Alternative Energies And Fuel Efficient Vehicle Technology

Today, U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-1) voted to strengthen our economy and national security by boosting American innovation in alternative energies and fuel efficient vehicle technology. H.R. 3246, the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009 would authorize and fund Department of Energy (DOE) programs that examine technology solutions to increase a vehicle's fuel efficiency, reduce its emissions, and improve its safety. H.R. 3246 passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 312 to 114.

"As our country faces the challenge of reversing the effects of climate change, we must embrace a similar challenge to lead the world in clean energy technology," said Rep. Heinrich. "Investing in research and development of advanced vehicle technologies will help our auto companies emerge as global leaders and create good paying jobs."

H.R. 3246 would authorize $550 million per year for the next five years for all vehicle technology programs at the Department of Energy. Of that total, $200 million would be for medium and heavy duty commercial vehicles, $30 million for user facilities, and $20 million for a non-road pilot program (e.g., construction and agricultural vehicles). The remaining $300 million would go toward diverse passenger and commercial vehicle technologies, such as the hybridization or full electrification of vehicle systems to reduce gasoline use.

The bipartisan Advanced Vehicle Technology Act is supported by a broad coalition, including labor groups like the United Autoworkers, auto companies such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Chrysler and business groups like the National Association of Manufacturers.
