Heinrich Statement On Administration's Announcement Of New Fuel Economy Rules

U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (NM-01) released this statement following the announcement by U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson of proposed fuel economy rules to raise the national standards above 35 miles per gallon by 2016.

"The proposed federal standards announced today parallel the clean cars rules New Mexico passed in 2007. By improving the fuel efficiency of vehicles, New Mexicans will save money at the gas pump, and will put America on the fast track to energy independence.

"Creating a harmonized and consistent national policy for emissions will level the playing field for New Mexico's car dealers by requiring the same fuel efficiency standards in all states."

The fuel economy rules announced today will help meet carbon reduction goals set by H.R. 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives in June. Rep. Heinrich voted in favor of this historic legislation that would create millions of new jobs, boost production of clean energy, reduce dependence on foreign oil, increase the efficiency of our buildings and homes, and help to protect our planet for future generations. Rep. Heinrich was instrumental in amending H.R. 2454 to ensure that the federal government leads by example on clean energy. His amendment would make it easier for federal agencies to contract with local clean energy producers to buy energy from renewable sources like wind and solar. H.R. 2454 awaits Senate action.
