Sen. Cornyn Statement On Transportation & HUD Appropriations Bill

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2009
Issues: Transportation

"Such frivolous spending would be reckless even in the best of times, let alone when we are facing record deficits and unemployment is teetering on double digits"

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a member of the Finance and Budget Committees, issued the following statement regarding his opposition to the FY 2010 Transportation-Department of Housing and Urban Development (THUD) Appropriations Bill.

"The Obama Administration and Congressional Democrats have increased Transportation and HUD funding an eye-popping 134 percent since last year. Such frivolous spending would be reckless even in the best of times, let alone when we are facing record deficits and unemployment is teetering on double digits. At some point, Congress must say enough is enough. I believe we reached that point some time ago. While some projects in this bill may be worthy, I cannot in good conscience risk our nation's financial health by supporting such an irresponsible increase in spending at this time."
