Van Hollen Statement On The Wilson Resolution

Today, Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Assistant to the Speaker, issued the following statement on the resolution disapproving of the conduct by Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-2) during the joint session of Congress on September 9, 2009:

“The House of Representatives has rules of decorum that must be respected by every Member of this institution. We teach our children to abide by certain rules of conduct, and we expect no less from Members of Congress. Failure to enforce these rules would set a terrible precedent and could lead to a breakdown of order in the House.

“We welcome a strong, vigorous debate on the floor of the House on all issues, but it must be conducted in an appropriate manner. With this matter now behind us, I hope the conduct of one Member will not distract from our effort to reform the health insurance system.”
