Murphy Statement On President Obama's Address To Congress On Health Care Reform

Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) released the following statement after President Obama's health care address to Congress this evening:

"The expectations on President Obama tonight couldn't have been higher, and the tension in the House chamber was palpable. With a passionate public tuning in from home and Members of Congress seated before him with the memories of an intense August fresh on our minds, President Obama had to set the record straight. And he did - in plain terms, he explained how our current health care system is broken, how we should fix it and pay for reforms, and perhaps most importantly - he addressed inaccurate rumors that have brought this debate to a near-fever pitch in recent weeks.

"After spending morning after morning in parks in Waterbury and Danbury, and listening to people in Simsbury and Washington, Connecticut, I returned to Congress this week more energized than ever to find a way to pass a health care bill. The only way we are going to succeed is if we come up with a way to lower costs for individuals and small businesses in Connecticut, provide more choices in the health insurance market, including a public insurance option for people who want it, and make insurance accessible to all Americans. It's the right thing to do, and we've got to get it right, as I fear the cost of failing will be too great for our nation's economy to bear."
