Capito Statement On Year Anniversary Of Bayer Cropscience Explosion

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement today on the one-year anniversary of the August 28th, 2008 explosion at the Kanawha Valley Bayer CropScience plant. Her comments follow an announcement this week that Bayer CropScience will eliminate 80 percent of the MIC stored at the Institute plant, and end all above-ground storage of the chemical.

"On the one-year anniversary of this tragic explosion, it's reassuring to see Bayer taking these critical steps to keep its employees and the community safe," said Capito. "This marks an important act of good faith and a positive step by Bayer on an issue that has led to considerable public concern. The capital investment and Bayer's commitment to keeping jobs in the Kanawha Valley is a particularly welcome sign.

"On this solemn anniversary, let us remember those who lost their lives and build on the announcements of recent days to make a safer and more secure Kanawha Valley."

In April, Capito served as a guest member of the House of Representatives' Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations during a hearing to investigate the explosion at the Bayer CropScience facility. Bayer employees will mark today's anniversary with a series of events at the plant.
