Capito Votes To Freeze Congressional Pay As House Considers Appropriations Bill

Citing fiscal discipline and the state of the economy, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., today voted to freeze congressional pay during votes on an omnibus appropriations package designed to fund key federal agencies for fiscal year 2009.

"As West Virginians tighten their belts, so should members of congress," said Capito, who has regularly opposed the congressional pay increases. "Taxpayers have seen their government spend billions and billions on bailouts and new spending, and they're asking for some fiscal discipline."

"Members of Congress don't need a raise when West Virginians and the American people are struggling to make ends meet."

In most years, Congress appropriates funding for cost-of-living increases in federal pay - including for Members of Congress. Capito has voted to oppose the annual increase since she was first-elected in 2000.
