Governor Kaine Announces Federal Reimbursement for Inauguration

-- Commonwealth Receives $2.8 million for security and public safety expenses --

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today announced more than $2.8 million in federal grants to reimburse local and state agencies for extraordinary expenses accrued by law enforcement, security, and public safety agencies during the Presidential Inauguration and transition period.

"President Obama's Inauguration was an event of historic significance, and I am proud that many members of our state and local agencies worked so well together to ensure a safe and memorable inauguration," Governor Kaine said. "I am especially pleased that we are now able to recoup some of the expenses associated with the successful efforts of these dedicated individuals. Senators Webb and Warner and Representatives Wolf, Moran and Connolly deserve credit for their hard work throughout this process."

Virginia incurred expenses of $5.7 million for costs associated with the Inauguration. The application for reimbursement was made on behalf of 13 applicants representing 51 state or local agencies. The Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services worked closely with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management in developing grant guidelines, soliciting applications, and assessing whether expenses met federal reimbursement requirements.

Reimbursement comes through the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance from the FY2009 Presidential Inauguration Security Assistance Grant Program and the FY2009 President Elect Security Assistance Grant Program. Applications were received from the counties of Arlington, Fairfax, and Stafford; the cities of Alexandria, Manassas and Winchester; the Virginia Departments of Military Affiars, Rail and Public Transportation, Emergency Management and Transportation; the Northern Virginia Hospital Alliance, George Mason University and the Virginia State Police.
