Congressman Fleming Declines Pay Raise

Congressman John Fleming announced today that he has sent a letter to the House Administration declining the 2.8 percent pay raise Congress voted to give itself last year.

"With so many American families struggling to make ends meet in this current economy, there is no reason Congress should be increasing their own paychecks," said Fleming. "Congress has contributed to the economic downturn we are now facing and should not be rewarded for their part in this crisis. I am anxious to begin working on solutions for the economy and finding ways to get businesses back on solid footing so that they can grow and create jobs."

Fleming sent the following letter to the House Administration on December 29, 2008.

Dear Committee on House Administration:

As the newly elected member from Louisiana's 4th Congressional District, I would like to formally and voluntarily decline the pay raise for the next congress.

I ask for your assistance in this matter and would appreciate the appropriate offices or individuals be instructed of this request.

If there are any questions or clarifications on this matter that you may provide to my office in written form, please do so, along with a written response to this request.

If the House Administration declines Fleming's request to not receive the pay raise, he will donate the $4,700 to a charity in the 4th Congressional District.
