Rep. Johnson Holds Successful Health Care Town Hall

More than 2,000 residents respectfully debate health care insurance reform

More than 2,000 residents attended Rep. Hank Johnson's town hall at Georgia Perimeter College on health care insurance reform legislation.

Unlike many other town halls across the country, Johnson presided over a "civil, polite and thoughtful" discussion.

Congressman Johnson and his staff, along with a panel of esteemed medical professionals, updated the status of health care legislation, discussed reform proposals and listened for the final hour and twenty minutes to the public during questions and comments period.

"I thought the meeting went extremely well," said Johnson. "We were here to have an open, respectful dialogue and I think we achieved that tonight. Our democracy works better when we treat each other with respect and when we are willing to listen - we all accomplished that at the town hall. It remains crucial that we move forward on this issue. To accept the status quo is to accept failure - leaving millions without affordable healthcare and that is not an option."

More than 500 citizens watched from the Cole Auditorium and more than a 1,000 watched from the college's gymnasium, which was equipped with a closed-circuit video feed. Another 500 citizens gathered outside the venue and practiced "active but respectful debate."
