Hoeven Commends Devils Lake On New Water Treatment Facility, Municipal Water Supply System

Gov. John Hoeven today sent congratulations to the community of Devils Lake on the groundbreaking for their new water treatment facility, part of an $18 million comprehensive municipal water system the city is building in partnership with the state and federal government. First Lady Mikey Hoeven addressed the group on the Governor's behalf at a ceremony at the site this morning.

In the course of its growth, the expanding lake had covered about six miles of the city's original water line, making it difficult or impossible to maintain. The new system includes 32.5 miles of pipeline, which is fed by four new wells. It will serve a population of approximately 7,200 people.

The state of North Dakota provided $8.5 million for the project, which includes a $4.5 million grant through the State Water Commission, and an additional $4 million low-interest loan through the state Health Department. The state share was used to build the transmission pipeline and develop a new well field. The Army Corps of Engineers and Environmental Protection Agency contributed the balance of funding.

"The state of North Dakota is very pleased to be a partner in this important project, which will help the community of Devils Lake secure and maintain a clean, reliable water supply system for its citizens," Hoeven said. "Like electricity and telephone service, a clean, reliable source of water is vital not just to individuals, but to communities. It is an essential element for economic growth and a good quality of life."
