Foster Supports Campus Safety
Today, Rep. Bill Foster (IL-14) supported legislation designed to enable our colleges and universities to easily obtain the best information available on how to keep their campuses safe and how to respond in the event of a campus emergency. The bill passed the House by voice vote today.
"With the approach of the one-year anniversary of the tragedy at Northern Illinois University, we continue to recognize the importance of keeping our students safe," said Foster. "However, this horrific event and others like it remind us that we must always be vigilant about improving campus safety. The bill that passed the House today ensures that colleges and universities will have the best information available to prevent and respond to campus emergencies."
H.R. 748, the Campus Safety Act, creates a National Center for Campus Public Safety, which will be administered through the Department of Justice's Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program. The Center will train campus public safety agencies, encourage research to strengthen college safety and security, and serve as a clearinghouse for the dissemination of relevant campus public safety information.
