Degette: Kay Revelations "Deeply Disturbing"

Testimony Reinforces Need for Independent Investigation of What Went Wrong

DENVER, CO - Democratic Floor Whip Diana DeGette (CO-01) released the following statement concerning the testimony of former chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay before the Senate Armed Services Committee today:

"David Kay's conclusion that Iraq had virtually no weapons of mass destruction and no substantial program to develop weapons of mass destruction comes as no surprise to me given the information I and all Members of Congress were provided. This revelation is deeply disturbing in that it flies in the face of all of the statements and assurances of the Bush Administration over the past two years.

Dr. Kay's statements raise extremely serious questions both about the judgment and ability of our intelligence agencies and the Administration's use of intelligence information. The Administration's lack of accuracy in assessing the threat Iraq posed points to a continuing vulnerability in our national security that must be addressed immediately. I hope that those who have defended the Bush Administration's assertions are as troubled as I am by Mr. Kay's conclusions and will finally add their support for the overdue independent investigation into just what went wrong.
