Sen. Cornyn Honors Service Members At Fort Sam Houston

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today attended a Welcome Home Warrior Citizen Award ceremony at Fort Sam Houston. Today's ceremony honored the service and sacrifices of the 208th Regional Support Group (RSG), which was deployed from June 2008 to June 2009 to Camp Anaconda in Balad, Iraq. Camp Anaconda is a significant air logistical support base in Iraq and our forces there play a significant role in the Global War on Terror. Sen. Cornyn joined Major General Russell Czerw, Fort Sam Houston Commander, and Retired Major General Elvin Schofield in honoring 30 of the RSG personnel at the ceremony.

"After a year of service in the Iraq Theater of the Global War on Terror, the 208th Regional Support Group is now back with their families who supported them and in the country that honors them for their service. They served during a critical year of transition in Iraq - as the United States implemented the ‘surge' strategy that turned the war around. From Camp Anaconda, this unit provided logistical support to some of the most sensitive missions undertaken by U.S. Special Forces.

"Now that they are back at home, there are several ways we can support them. A newly implemented law expands the G.I. Bill to provide these service members and their families with greater opportunities to earn a degree and open doors for them during this troubled economy. I was proud to work on a provision of this new law that for the first time allows service members to transfer educational benefits they've earned through the G.I. Bill to their spouses and children.

"I have also been working to ensure our troops have their voices heard and votes counted during every election. Unfortunately, during deployment, many service members have been denied their right to have their votes counted in U.S. elections. Legislation I introduced, which recently passed the Senate, will ensure every military vote is counted. I hope the President will sign this legislation into law as soon as possible."
