Capito Offers Support For Veterans In Navigating New Program
As the new GI Bill goes into effect, Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., is offering to assist veterans in navigating the new benefits program as they select the benefits that are best for them.
"This legislation provides key education benefits to our service men and women," said Capito, who supported passage of the legislation during the 110th Congress. "The GI Bill has long been a key to supporting our veterans after their service is up, and the new bill makes important upgrades to the program for our post-9/11 veterans."
"With the implementation of the new bill, I want to remind West Virginia's veterans that my office is available to assist them and provide information about the new benefit."
Last year's update to the original 1944 bill appropriates $63 billion over ten years to provide increased college aid for members of the military who served after September 11, 2001.
The benefit would provide in-state tuition, along with funds for associated fees, for students enrolled in a public college or university. It would also provide a monthly housing stipend and $1,000 per year for expenses related to books and supplies.
Service men and women who serve three years or more will be eligible for the full benefit, while those with shorter periods of service would be eligible for a sliding percentage of the benefit amount. Veterans may also transfer benefits to their spouses and dependents.
