Celebrating 56 Years of Democracy in The Middle East

WASHINGTON, DC - Democratic Floor Whip Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement on the 56th anniversary of the creation of Israel:

Today, on Yom Ha'atzmaut, we honor the sacrifice and accomplishments of the citizens of Israel and the Jewish community around the world.

Fifty-six years ago today, the creation of Israel ended too many years of struggle and horror for the Jewish community. I am very happy to note that it took President Harry Truman only 11 minutes to recognize the new Jewish state and the 67th United States Congress quickly passed a resolution supporting the new country.

Since then, the United States' relations with the sole democracy in the Middle East have only strengthened. We stand together in the protection of freedoms for our peoples and the expansion of self-government to other peoples around the globe. Even in these dark and troubling times, stand united in the war against terrorism.

That is why I, and everyone who supports democracy and freedom, honor Israel's 56th anniversary. We hope that at the very least Israel's 56th year will bring the start of a more secure and peaceful existence for its citizens and everyone in the Middle East.
