Congressman Peters Statement on Senate Vote on CARS Program

Congressman Gary Peters, author of the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009 (H.R. 3246) and whose district is home to Chrysler World Headquarters, three GM plants and more auto suppliers than any district in the country, released the following statement today following Senate approval of an additional $2 billion to continue the highly successful Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS, a.k.a. "Cash for Clunkers"):

"Increased automobile sales reverberate throughout our entire economy. Not only are manufacturers, suppliers and dealers across the country benefiting, but steelmakers and others say the CARS program will boost their businesses as well. Economists agree the program will lift our GDP, possibly even making the difference between positive and negative growth this quarter.

"Some have asked why wide bipartisan majorities are now acting to support our auto industry. It is because more and more elected officials are starting to recognize what we've been saying all along—the United States automobile industry is strategically vital to the overall health of the American economy. The Senate acted wisely today in extending this extremely effective economic stimulus program."
