U.S. Representative John Boozman today made the following statement after the House vote on H.R. 1 the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:

"We are faced with economic troubles that we can work to help resolve, but this legislation is not what the American people are asking for. It's unfortunate that Speaker Pelosi didn't craft legislation that gets to the core of our economic problems by protecting and creating jobs and securing our pension plans. Instead this 1,073 page bill is light on job creation and heavy on spending for pet projects."

"The Arkansas unemployment rate is more than 7 percent but I am not convinced spending hundreds of billions of dollars on projects listed in this legislation will help produce jobs for hardworking Arkansans. This bill threatens our future generations by robbing our kids and our grandkids of prosperity and leaving them with this outrageous price tag."

"We must be allowed to read the legislation, but with less than a day to review this, no lawmaker was able to accomplish that. Congress owes it to hardworking, taxpaying Americans to be thorough when appropriating their money and I'm concerned we didn't achieve that with this massive spending bill."
