Boozman: We Need Transparency and Accountability
Supports legislation to eliminate funding for czars
U.S. Representative John Boozman announced his support for eliminating funding for czars' who hold senior policy-making positions while bypassing Senate confirmation.
"These decision makers control the policies that impact the lives of all Americans yet we have many questions about their role in governing. There is little information about their qualifications, what department they belong to and what power they hold. They need to be accountable to Congress and the American people, but the appointment of czars' circumvents the system and violates our system of checks and balances," Boozman said.
Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution entrusts the U.S. Senate to advise and provide consent on executive nominations. This law extends beyond cabinet-level appointments. Assistant secretaries and undersecretaries must follow the process of Senate confirmation, but only seven of the 34 czars appointed by President Obama have been confirmed by the Senate.
Boozman signed on as cosponsor of H.R. 3226 the Czar Accountability and Reform (CZAR) Act of 2009 that requires transparency and accountability of czars' to Congress.
