Boozman Statement on Amendment to Defund Planned Parenthood

Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2010

U.S. Representative John Boozman (R-AR) today issued the following statement after voting in support of an amendment that would have denied taxpayer funding to the abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.

"Lawmakers must spend taxpayers' money wisely and efficiently. How the federal government spends taxpayer resources reflects our national priorities and should always reflect the priorities of a majority of the American people. That is why I supported an amendment that would have denied funding to the nation's largest abortion provider, Planned Parenthood.

Every year, family planning programs supported through federal Title X funding provide critical resources to under-served communities. Unfortunately, every year hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars go to fund Planned Parenthood, an organization that last year provided nearly 290,000 abortions. Overwhelmingly the American people, including pro-choice supporters, object to the use of taxpayer resources to fund abortion. Once again, the majority didn't listen to the American people by allowing taxpayer dollars to continue to flow to Planned Parenthood. These lawmakers need to explain to the American people how they intend to reduce abortions while funding abortion providers with taxpayer dollars."

Boozman is a member of the Bipartisan Congressional Pro-Life Caucus and the Values Action Team, conservative lawmakers who work to create pro-family and pro-life legislation.
