Moran Supports Effort to Control Government Spending

Congressman Jerry Moran voted in favor of legislation preventing larger deficits. The House passed legislation that would reinstate a "pay-as-you-go" (PayGo) statute that requires new spending to be paid for with cuts to other programs.

"The PayGo legislation will require increased scrutiny of many spending proposals," Moran said. "When budgets are not met and spending exceeds income, certain safeguards must be implemented to curb additional spending. As Americans now are struggling to balance their budgets - Congress should do the same. I don't want our deficit to burden future generations. I look forward to opportunities to eliminate the waste of American tax dollars."

The legislation will make it difficult for the White House and Congress to enact mandatory spending changes that increase the U.S. deficit.

Moran continued, "Amendments were offered to make this legislation more restrictive, and I was disappointed that they were not adopted. However, Congress needs to demonstrate fiscal discipline and this legislation is a modest effort to control government spending and decrease our bloated government programs."

Moran is an original co-sponsor of a constitutional amendment, H.J. Res 1 - the Balanced Budget Amendment, that requires the federal government to operate on a balanced budget.
