Sen. Cornyn, San Angelo Landowners & Officials Voice Opposition To Pending Clean Water Restoration Act

Legislation Would Impose Federal Red Tape On All Bodies Of Water At Direct Cost To Farmers, Ranchers, Landowners

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today met with area farmers, ranchers, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Mayor Pro-Tem Jon Mark Hogg, Tom Green County Judge Mike Brown, City Manager Harold Dominguez, State Representative Drew Darby, and senior representatives from various associations across the state to discuss their shared opposition to the Clean Water Restoration Act. This legislation, which recently passed the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee and awaits consideration by the full Senate, would overturn two Supreme Court rulings to greatly extend federal government oversight to all bodies of water-imposing new costs and bureaucratic burdens directly on Texas landowners. Even the "playa lakes" typical to West Texas, which can appear and disappear in a matter of hours, would be placed under federal control if the Clean Water Restoration Act is allowed to pass.

"My meeting today with farmers, ranchers and landowners from San Angelo and across West Texas only reinforced my strong belief that the Clean Water Restoration Act is wrong for Texas and wrong for rural America. I will be working to defeat this misguided legislation in the Senate. It is a direct affront to rural Texans and yet another example of how the current Administration is attempting to grow the government's size and scope to previously unimaginable levels.
