Congressman Adrian Smith (R-NE) today released the following comment after the Senate announced it will not take action on the government-run health care legislation until September, at the earliest. The timeline for House of Representatives action on the bill remains uncertain.

"I am glad Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid recognized what many of my colleagues and I have been saying since the idea of having an artificial deadline was first floated - this is an extremely complex, difficult issue which shouldn't be rushed. Instead of taking a more measured approach, however, the House Leadership seems bound and determined to force through a government takeover of health care by any means necessary in order to meet an artificial deadline.

"Instead of such a government takeover of health care and higher taxes, I would like to see Congress work together in a fiscally disciplined, bipartisan manner to ensure all Americans have access to high quality health care," Smith said.
