The House of Representatives today approved an amendment offered by Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., to restore $10 million in funding for rural water projects during floor consideration of the FY 2010 Agriculture Appropriations Bill.

"Funding for rural water projects is vital to the quality of life in our local communities," said Capito in a speech on the floor of the House. "Small communities have the greatest difficulty providing safe, affordable public drinking water due to limited resources, and this amendment is designed to help address those challenges."

The President's original budget request reduced funding for the Rural Water and Wastewater Disposal Program below last year's levels by just over $10 million. The Capito amendment would restore that funding.

"This amendment ensures that our communities have improved access to the tools they need to provide quality water service in rural America," Capito added later.

The House of Representatives approved the Capito amendment by a wide bipartisan margin on Thursday morning.
