Approps Bill Fails To Address Transportation Challenges, Capito Says

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement after the House of Representatives considered the Transportation and Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill.

"Nothing in this legislation addresses the significant shortfall in the highway trust fund," said Capito. "This bill will spend $41 billion from an account that has less than $4 billion. Yet instead of addressing this shortfall, we've been told that we'll deal with it later. That's not the mentality we should have and that's not the responsible way to govern.

"This bill also makes official the President's decision to cut nearly $10 million for completing Corridor H. Instead, we make room for another 26 percent increase in discretionary spending elsewhere. These priorities simply don't square with the needs of West Virginia.

"Furthermore, I believe we should consider a reauthorization of the highway bill so we can make a real investment in our roads and highways to create jobs and improve our infrastructure. That would truly be a real stimulus."
