Murphy, New Democrat Coalition Discuss The Economy, Fiscal Responsibility With President Obama At White House Meeting
Congressman Chris Murphy (CT-5) joined his fellow New Democrat Coalition members at the White House today for a meeting with President Barack Obama. Murphy and his colleagues discussed the economy, the President's budget, and how the group's core issues - health care reform, energy reform, and investment in technology - make fiscal sense by saving the country money, creating jobs, and helping to turn around the health of our economy.
"If we don't make big changes in the way we provide health care, and power our cars, homes, and businesses, then we will limp, rather than roar back from this recession, and President Obama knows it. I left the White House today feeling confident in our ability to work together to find cost effective ways to make big changes in the lives of people in Connecticut and across the country," said Murphy.
The New Democrat Coalition is comprised of moderate Members of Congress who have built a reputation as experts on fiscal responsibility, economic growth, national security, and technology development.
Murphy was pleased to hear the President speak about health information technology and investment in green technology. In the recently enacted economic recovery law, Murphy pushed for a $19 billion nationwide investment in health information technology (health IT). The health IT funding aims to make our health care system work better for patients and to make health care providers more efficient. And expansion of green technology will create jobs and provide tax breaks in Connecticut, and save the country money on energy costs in the long term.
Murphy and his New Democrat Coalition colleagues met with President Obama, Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Senior Advisor David Axelrod in the State Dining Room in the White House. Murphy has been a member of the Coalition since taking office in 2006.
