Congressman Jim Himes Takes Oath Of Office

United States Representative Jim Himes today pledged "to get our economy back on track" when he was sworn-in during the opening ceremonies for the 111th Congress.

Congressman Himes, who represents Connecticut's Fourth Congressional District, was also appointed by his colleagues to serve on the House Financial Services Committee, which has jurisdiction over the nation's banking, insurance and securities laws as well as affordable housing policy.

"The residents of my district have entrusted me with a very important job - a job that I take very seriously," said Congressman Himes. "I am honored to serve the people of Connecticut's Fourth District and I'll work day and night to get our economy back on track by improving our infrastructure, providing a quality education for our children, and investing in environmentally and economically sustainable sources of energy."

As he took the oath of office, Congressman Himes was joined on the House floor by his children, Emma (9) and Linley (6). His wife, Mary, and his mother Judith, also attended the swearing-in ceremony.

One of the first official acts of Congress was to appoint Congressman Himes to the influential House Financial Services Committee, which is an exclusive Committee in the United States House of Representatives. In this new role, Congressman Himes hopes to draw on his private-sector and non-profit experiences to address the current economic crisis.

"The financial sector is an important driver of Fairfield County's economy and I am pleased to serve on the House Financial Services Committee where I will work hard to restore faith in our capital markets and to create affordable housing for our residents," said Congressman Himes. "Transportation and infrastructure are also top priorities for Southwestern Connecticut and for me and while I was not assigned to the Transportation Committee in the first round of allocations, I will continue to fight for a position on this committee and for strong transportation legislation in the 111th Congress."

Most recently, Congressman Himes ran the Northeast operations for Enterprise Community Partners, where he led the way in financing the construction of thousands of affordable housing units in the Northeast United States, often using new green technologies to achieve energy efficiency and reduce utility costs. Congressman Himes worked for 12 years as Vice President at Goldman Sachs.
