Polis Hails Passage Of GIVE Act

U.S. Rep. Jared Polis today urged his fellow members of Congress to answer President Obama's call to launch a new era of American service and volunteerism and support the Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education or GIVE Act, which passed the House today by a vote of 321 to 105.

"The generosity of the American people has fueled our nation throughout its history and seen us through our darkest hours," said Polis. "The GIVE Act harnesses the power of America's two greatest natural resources—our ingenuity and our work ethic—to generate a new era of national prosperity."

A member of the House Education and Labor Committee and original co-sponsor of this historic legislation, Congressman Polis successfully inserted language into the bill during committee markup last week, amending the bill to collect and report important demographic and socioeconomic information about volunteers, in order to ensure that the new and expanded service programs reach out to all Americans, from all walks of life.

Video and text of Congressman Polis floor speech in support of the GIVE Act is available at his website www.polis.house.gov.
