Blackburn Continues Push To Cut Spending

Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) continued her push to trim federal spending by five percent today. As with several other appropriations bills this year, Blackburn offered an amendment to Energy and Water Appropriations that would enforce a five percent across-the-board cut. In so doing, the Blackburn Amendment would save the taxpayer $1.7 billion and reset Energy and Water spending levels for the next budget.

Spending on Energy and Water programs has increased by 183% over the past three years. The very programs being funded on the House Floor this afternoon have already received $51 billion in stimulus funding and $7 billion in supplemental funding this year. Commenting on her amendment, Blackburn said:

"Debt incurred is opportunity denied. This Congress has already spent one trillion dollars more than we have taken in. This trillion dollar deficit is the largest in American history. It represents the height of fiscal irresponsibility and is absolutely unconscionable. Through this appropriations cycle I have attempted to reign in this deficit by cutting spending. Today again I will ask the bureaucrats in Washington and their patrons in Congress to trim a nickel from every dollar they spend. As our deficit and debt grow to historic and dangerous proportions it is more urgent than ever that we bring spending under control."
