Moran is First House Member to Sign Health Care Pledge

Pledge Promotes Transparency and Accountability

Today, Congressman Jerry Moran was commended by Let Freedom Ring, a nationally renowned organization dedicated to conservative principles, for being the first Member of the U.S. House of Representatives to sign the Responsible Health Care Reform Pledge.

The Responsible Health Care Reform Pledge is a promise made by a Member of Congress to not vote for any health care reform package that the Member has not read and that has not been available to the American public on the Internet for at least 72 hours.

"In the recent months, the Obama Administration and Congress have passed rushed and flawed legislation that drastically expands government and intrudes on our free-market system," Moran said. "I am one of only 17 of 435 Members of the House to vote against each of the government bailouts. One of the reasons I was skeptical of these massive spending bills was the haste and lack of transparency in which these measures were crafted. In the debate over health care reform, it is my hope that Congress will not rush a bill through with so much at stake just to get something passed. We need to have a true exchange of ideas and a real debate on the different proposals that will bring some much needed change to our current system."

The Responsible Health Care Reform Pledge reads as follows:
I, Congressman Jerry Moran, pledge to my constituents and to the American people that I will not vote to enact any health care reform package that:
1.) I have not read, personally, in its entirety; and,
2.) Has not been available, in its entirety, to the American people on the Internet for at least 72 hours so that they can read it too.
