Lance: $1.5 Trillion House Healthcare Bill "A Non-Starter"

Congressman Leonard Lance (NJ-07) today voiced his strong opposition to healthcare reform legislation currently being crafted in the House of Representatives that would cost $1.5 trillion to implement while raising taxes on tens of thousands of New Jerseyeans.

"The proposed $1.5 trillion healthcare reform measure that raises taxes on New Jerseyeans while adding to our already ballooning deficit is a non-starter," said Lance.

The non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently estimated that the House healthcare overhaul bill would cost $1.5 trillion over 10 years. According to a number of news outlets, the House tax-writing Ways and Means Committee plans to help pay for the measure by raising taxes on people earning $250,000 or more and taxing sugary beverages.

Lance said he supports healthcare reform that allows Americans who like their plans keep them and one that ensures that patients and doctors - not government bureaucrats - stay in charge of critical, personal medical decisions. Earlier this summer, Lance offered a proposal to reduce costs, expand access, and increase the quality of care in a way Americans can afford - without new taxes, costly mandates, or a government takeover.
