Moran Sponsors Legislation To Reduce Wasteful Spending

Congressman Jerry Moran today sponsored the Congressional Accountability Act, which would create a line-item veto to target wasteful earmarks and discourage lawmakers from inserting frivolous spending into future bills.

"I recently voted against a massive Omnibus spending bill that cost billions to American taxpayers without delivering much back to them in return," Moran said. "This bill will hand the President the authority to eliminate frivolous spending.

Moran became a member of the Fiscal Responsibility Working Group that monitors how the administration will spend $787 billion stimulus package to ensure that taxpayer's dollars are spent responsibly. Sponsoring the Congressional Accountability Act is one more action Moran has taken to promote fiscal responsibility and to reduce wasteful government spending in Washington, D.C.

"The line item veto is a necessary tool our government can use to eliminate waste and ensure that taxpayers' dollars are spent wisely while reducing our country's debt," Moran said.

Provisions in the Congressional Accountability Act will require congressional approval for all the items the President proposes to remove from a larger bill. The legislation will also require that both Chambers of Congress must pass a specific recession request before it can become law. All money saved by reducing earmarks through the provisions in the legislation would be used to reduce the deficit.
