Moran Meets With President Obama To Discuss Spending Legislation

Congressman Jerry Moran today met with President Barack Obama to discuss his concerns with irresponsible spending in the $825 billion economic spending bill, H.R. 1. Moran, along with other members of the House of Representatives, met with the President today to convey his concerns with the stimulus legislation.

"We need to get the country moving," Moran said. "An effective stimulus would create jobs and encourage business growth. Unfortunately, this legislation includes the spending of billions of dollars that is to be spent on programs that simply will not stimulate the economy."

The legislation would add billions of dollars in government spending to improve government facilities and public-assistance programs. The legislation will fund projects such as: $600 million to buy energy-efficient cars for the federal government; $275 million to fix State Department computers; $200 million for lawn repairs on the National Mall and $400 million for climate-change research.

"I encouraged the President to return the focus of this package to programs that generate more revenue than what the legislation costs. An appropriate package would consist of a mix of infrastructure investments and targeted tax cuts, which would be effective in stimulating the economy and creating jobs without adding billions of dollars of frivolous spending to our national debt," Moran concluded.

H.R. 1 is scheduled to come to the House floor for a vote tomorrow.
