Heinrich Votes To Strengthen Small Business, Create Jobs, Spur Economic Growth

Today U.S. Representative Martin Heinrich (D-NM) cosponsored the Stop the Congressional Pay Raise Act. This bipartisan legislation would block a $4,700 automatic pay hike for members of Congress.

"A Congressional pay raise couldn't come at a worse time," said Rep. Heinrich. "Many New Mexicans will not have a cost-of-living increase this year, others have been forced to take pay cuts, and still others are unemployed."

In 1989, Congress passed a law that provides lawmakers with an automatic pay raise every January unless they vote specifically to reject the raise. The legislation cosponsored by Rep. Heinrich, H.R. 156, would eliminate the 2010 congressional pay raise. The National Taxpayers Union, Council for Citizens Against Government Waste, Taxpayers for Common Sense and The Senior Citizens League have all endorsed the legislation.
