Clyburn Lauds Passage of American Clean Energy and Security Act

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today released the following statement on passage of HR 2454, the American Clean Energy and Security Act, landmark legislation that will create millions of green collar jobs, increase our national security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil and preserve our planet by reducing the pollution that causes global warming.

"The American Clean Energy and Security Act is ground-breaking transformative legislation that will revolutionize our economy, strengthen our national security and enhance our environment for future generations. This balanced and broad-reaching bill will create millions of clean energy jobs; cut the use of foreign oil by 5 million barrels a day by 2030—currently what we import from Middle East and Venezuela; and protect consumers from price spikes and keep costs low as we transition to cleaner energy. We make an historic investment in renewable and alternative energy sources with a twenty-fold increase in solar, a 500 percent increase in wind energy, a 350 percent increase in biomass and a 50 percent increase in geothermal. Most importantly, this legislation reflects the regional energy diversity of America, promoting a smorgasbord of clean energy solutions including nuclear energy.

"Passage of the American Clean Energy and Security Act is the next major step in a comprehensive effort to put people back to work, strengthen the economy and help make the American dream a reality. Thanks to the legislative accomplishments of the last six months including the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, foreclosure mitigation and mortgage reform, the economy is showing the first signs of recovery. Yet there is more to be done. I look forward to working with my colleagues on legislation to provide quality affordable health care for all Americans—which will have the greatest positive impact on family budgets, business balance sheets and the American economy."
