Himes Votes to Strengthen Chemical Facility Safety

Congressman Jim Himes helped strengthen and secure facilities across the country that process dangerous chemicals. The House Committee on Homeland Security voted late yesterday to send the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Act (CFATS) of 2009 to the full House for consideration.

"Protecting our communities from those who would misuse dangerous substances is critical to our local and national security," said Congressman Himes. "The Chemical Anti-Terrorism Act will provide better tools to prevent terrorist activity and leave us less vulnerable to attack."

Under CFATS, facilities that store, process, or sell dangerous chemicals are regulated based on several factors including the threats posed to them, their vulnerabilities, and the consequences of a potential attack.
