Sen. Cornyn: Miranda Rights For Terror Suspects Will Make America Less Safe

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement after FBI Director Robert Mueller confirmed in a letter to House Members that the FBI is providing Miranda warnings to certain terrorists captured and detained overseas at Bagram military base in Afghanistan, and other places.

"I urge President Obama to reconsider this practice. I believe it unnecessarily undermines our ability to gain valuable intelligence from terrorist detainees who would rather talk to their lawyers than to U.S. interrogators. And if this ill-conceived practice is allowed to continue, I fear we are headed down a slippery slope that could lead to dangerous scenarios where American Soldiers and Marines are forced to pause and read would-be suicide bombers Miranda rights before detaining them.

"It would seem this is yet another move by the Administration to downgrade the Global War on Terror to a law enforcement action. Heading in this direction will make America and the world less safe."
