Congressman Gary Peters, whose Michigan Congressional district is home to Chrysler World Headquarters, several General Motors plants and more auto suppliers than any other district in the country, issued the following statement today after the president's announcement of new fuel efficiency standards for automobiles sold in the U.S.:
"American automakers asked for a uniform national standard and flexibility in how they meet it and I am pleased this plan provides them that. Automakers, the UAW and elected leaders across the political spectrum agree that more fuel efficient vehicles save consumers money at the pump and reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. Today's announcement shows that getting more fuel efficient vehicles on the road is a national priority, and all stakeholders need to work together if that goal is to be met.
"The new standard announced today is highly ambitious and will require the rapid development of new advanced technologies. Detroit will need a strong federal partner to help develop the technologies and market conditions necessary to achieve these goals. The U.S. must be willing to invest in the infrastructure to produce advanced fuel saving technologies as aggressively as other nations and provide consumers incentives to purchase more fuel efficient vehicles."
