Congressman Peter's Statement On Vehicle Fleet Announcement

President Obama announced today that the General Services Administration (GSA) will accelerate its purchase of new cars for the federal government's fleet by investing funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to buy new, fuel efficient vehicles produced by American companies. Following the announcement, Congressman Peters issued the following statement:

"The President is committed to addressing this economic crisis and the effect it is having on our auto industry, which is why he fought to include fleet modernization in the economic recovery plan. This funding to buy new cars from American companies and the tax credits for new car purchases are two more reasons enacting the economic recovery plan was so important for Michigan.

"President Obama has said he would support further measures to boost new car demand. I have cosponsored the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) Act, and Congress should pass this legislation as soon as possible. Federal bridge loans and restructuring are necessary, but our auto companies must also sell more cars if they are to achieve long-term viability. History shows that one of the best ways to lift an economy out of recession is to sell more automobiles, and boosting new car demand will help domestic automakers lead our nation out of the current financial crisis."
