Wait…Wait…Wait For It: As Gas Prices Make Their Ascent, Democrat Leaders Will Sing Familiar Tunes About Energy Independence

Sen. Cornyn: Will They Back Up Talk With Real Action This Time?

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement calling on Democrat leaders to act, not make empty promises, as gas prices continue to increase for the 51st consecutive day:

"As sure as fireworks on the Fourth of July, we can expect Democrat leaders in Congress to start talking about the need for energy independence as gas prices continue to climb again this season. You'll hear lots of rhetoric about the need for action, more domestic production, and diversifying our energy portfolio with alternative fuels. What you won't hear is what they've done to accomplish these goals in the past year-since last summer's record-setting gas price crisis when all Democrat leaders could talk about was the need for action to bring down those prices. The minute gas prices began their descent and jingles like ‘pain at the pump' began to scroll off the news ticker, Democrat leaders abandoned their energy proposals and kicked the gas can down the road yet again.

"As we start to hear the first of these familiar promises from these same leaders this summer, will it again be all talk and no action? I hope Democrat leaders will work with Republicans to once and for all tackle our energy challenges, open the doors to increased domestic production, and finally bring an end to our dangerous dependence on foreign oil. Add a recession into the mix this year, and the American people are in no position to shoulder another summer of skyrocketing energy prices while their leaders make empty promises."
