U.S. Representative John Boozman is leading efforts to recognize the 225th Anniversary of the U.S. Marshals Service in 2014 with the introduction of a U.S. Marshals Service Commemorative Coin.
"The U.S. Marshals Service has played a vital role in the development and growth of our nation," Boozman said. "I believe that a commemorative coin will help recognize and honor more than two centuries of heroic, brave men and women that worked to uphold the law."
H.R. 2799, the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act, requires the Secretary of the Treasury to issue up to 500,000 silver dollars and a maximum of 100,000 five dollar gold coins.
The first $5 million collected from the coin would go to the United States Marshals Service National Museum in Fort Smith, Arkansas for preservation, maintenance, and display of artifacts and documents of the United States Marshals Service.
The United States Marshals Service Commemorative Coin will be the first commemorative coin to honor the United States Marshals Service and will bring national and international attention to the lasting legacy of this Nations oldest law enforcement agency.
Established in 1789, the U.S. Marshals Service is the nation's oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency. The U.S. Marshals Service has had major significance in the history in the United States and has directly contributed to the safety and preservation of this country, by serving as an instrument of civil authority used by all three branches of the United States Government.
