Rights That Make A Wrong: U.S. Officials Read Terror Suspects "Their" Miranda Rights in Afghanistan

Sen. Cornyn Calls On Administration To Issue Explanation To The American People

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, today issued the following statement regarding a firsthand report from U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican on the House Intelligence Committee, detailing how FBI officials are reading Miranda rights to terror suspects in Afghanistan:

"After hearing Congressman Rogers' firsthand account of terror suspects being read Miranda rights abroad, I believe the President owes the America people an explanation. Congressional hearings on this issue are in order, in my view, to determine whether this is common practice in the Obama Administration. Should we learn that this practice is being quietly forced on U.S. military personnel, I will demand President Obama put a stop to it, as I believe it places our personnel in harm's way. If confirmed, we are headed down a slippery slope that could lead to dangerous scenarios where Green Berets are forced to pause and read would-be suicide bombers ‘their' Miranda rights before detaining them.

"It would seem this is yet another move by the Administration to downgrade the Global War on Terror to a law enforcement effort and the beginning steps of its ‘global justice' initiative. Heading in this direction will make America and the world less safe."

NOTE: A Justice Department spokesman told the Weekly Standard Thursday that the department will not be answering any questions about the number of high-level detainees who have been Mirandized since President Obama took office five months ago.
