Capito Voices Support For "Cash For Clunkers" Bill

Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., released the following statement today as the House prepared to consider HR 2751, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009, also known as the "Cash for Clunkers" bill:

"At a time of turmoil in our automotive industry, I hope this bill can provide a much-needed bit of economic energy," said Capito, who voiced her intent to support the measure when it comes up for a vote this evening.

"While this bill does not single-handedly solve the problems of the American car industry, it stands to help spur sales and put more fuel efficient cars on the road."

"I'm also pleased to see this legislation move as a stand-alone bill, rather than as an amendment to a controversial piece of legislation like the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill. Cash for clunkers has broad bipartisan support and we don't need to weigh it down with other measures."

The Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save Act of 2009 was introduced by Rep. Betty Sutton, D-Ohio, and would provide a $3,500 to $4,500 tax credit for car-buyers who trade in an older vehicle to purchase a new fuel efficient model. A version of this bill was recently attached to the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill, but the legislation has since been offered as a separate bill.

HR 2751 will be considered by the House of Representatives later this afternoon. It must garner a two-thirds majority vote.
