Reed Statement on Comprehensive Health Care Reform

Today, following the release of a working draft of the Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued the following statement:

"Our health care system is too expensive, inefficient, and ineffectual. High premiums and a lack of basic coverage are hurting families and businesses in Rhode Island and across the country. This situation is also putting America at a competitive disadvantage in the global marketplace.

"Health care reform efforts like this bill are about bringing down costs by incentivizing quality, affordable, and effective health care. It is about preserving what works under the current system and letting people keep the coverage they have while at the same time by reducing costs and extending health coverage to more than 46 million uninsured Americans.

"We still have a lot of work to do and many details to work out. But we are moving forward with a bipartisan spirit and I am confident we will have broad support from the American people."
