Statement By Rep. Yvette D. Clarke On The Nomination Of Judge Sonia Sotomayor To Serve As An Associate Justice Of The U.S. Supreme Court

Choosing a Supreme Court Justice is one of the most important decisions a president makes. I think President Obama made an excellent choice in nominating Judge Sonia Sotomayor. She is a highly qualified, extremely intelligent, and a great defender of our constitution. Her experience as a lawyer and as a judge in the Federal District Court and the Federal Court of Appeals will serve us as a nation very well.

"As a woman, I am proud that the court will now have its third woman justice in history. As a Caribbean American, I am filled with pride that she could be the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court. And as a native New Yorker, I am elated that she hails from my hometown. I am extremely confident that Judge Sonia Sotomayor will be a superb justice for years to come."
