Governor Rounds Announces New South Dakota Risk Pool Eligibility for Children

Gov. Mike Rounds says a new law will allow children with pre-existing health conditions and no health care coverage to join the South Dakota Risk Pool, starting July 1.

"Every child in South Dakota should have health insurance, and now every child can," the Governor says. "The South Dakota Risk Pool will begin taking applications today for children who have been without health care coverage."

The new law allows children who have been without health care coverage for 12 months or longer and meet the eligibility requirements to enroll during the open enrollment period, July 1-Aug. 29, 2009, without a pre-existing condition waiting period.

Children who have been without health coverage for at least six months and meet eligibility requirements may enroll beginning July 1, with a six-month, pre-existing-condition waiting period.

Children may be eligible if meeting the following criteria: younger than 19, United States citizens, South Dakota residents, no coverage for the last six months, have been declined or offered coverage with riders or amendments, and are not eligible for other coverage.

The South Dakota Risk Pool provides both medical and pharmacy benefits. Preventive care services, such as immunizations and well-child checks, are also covered.
