Creigh Deeds' Statement on Short-Sighted Rejection of Stimulus for Laid-Off Virginians

Today, Senator Creigh Deeds, a Democratic candidate for Governor, stood with Governor Tim Kaine to cast the deciding vote in the Virginia Senate to approve $125 million in federal stimulus money for laid-off Virginia workers. Unfortunately, the Republicans in the House of Delegates took an extremely short-sighted approach when they killed this measure by a vote of 53-46. Earlier today, Republican gubernatorial nominee Bob McDonnell also announced his opposition to taking advantage of $125 million in federal stimulus money. Deeds released the following statement after the conclusion of the veto session:

"It's unconscionable that Bob McDonnell and Virginia Republicans decided to turn their backs on stimulus funding that would have helped laid-off Virginia workers get back on their feet. This economic crisis is breaking family budgets across the commonwealth, yet Bob McDonnell and his Republican allies still don't get that Virginians are hurting. This isn't about Democrats or Republicans, it's about what's best for Virginia. We need a leader who understands the day-to-day struggles of working families. As Governor, I will build on the Warner-Kaine years and put hard-working Virginians first."
