Governor Kaine Celebrates National Bike to Work Day

- Encourages Virginians to consider alternative transportation during their daily commute -

Governor Timothy M. Kaine today celebrated National Bike to Work Day by leading a "commuter convoy" from Monroe Park near the Virginia Commonwealth University campus to the George Washington statue on the State Capitol grounds. Governor Kaine was joined by Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones, members of their respective staffs, and a host of downtown bicycle commuters.

"Today's events provide a great opportunity to encourage everyone to bike or even walk to work where appropriate," Governor Kaine said. "We all know the cost of energy will continue to increase, and we know our use of gasoline has a growing negative impact on our environment. We can combat both problems by using alternative transportation to commute to our jobs."

Bicycling is widely recognized as one of the most efficient forms of transportation and offers independent mobility for many Virginians traveling between work, school, and home. Use of bicycles and other alternative transportation benefits all Virginians by easing traffic congestion, reducing air pollution, and saving highway construction dollars. Richmond commuters were also encouraged to ride on GRTC buses, all of which are equipped with bike racks.
