Memorial Day Weekend: Make it Fatality Free

Gov. Mike Rounds is hoping for another fatality-free Memorial Day weekend.

Last year was the first Memorial Day weekend in five years without any fatal crashes on South Dakota Highways. Injuries and total crashes also were down significantly.

"I encourage South Dakotans to keep up the good work and be responsible behind the wheel," Gov. Rounds said. "Traffic laws are in place to keep the motoring public safe. Please respect the law, and enjoy the long weekend."

The Governor encourages drivers to:
· Follow speed limits. It is not safe to travel faster than posted speed limits
· Wear a seatbelt. Seatbelt violations cost $25
· Don't drink and drive. The average cost of a first-time DUI conviction is $4,000
· Slow down in construction zones. Fines are double in construction zones

Although no one died last year in Memorial Day weekend crashes on South Dakota roads, 121 people perished in traffic over the course of the year.
