Congressman Courtney votes in favor of legislation to protect Connecticut working families from abusive credit card companies' practices

Today, Congressman Joe Courtney and the House of Representatives passed critical measures to protect credit cardholders from abusive practices by credit card companies. Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd ushered the legislation through the Senate where it was overwhelmingly passed on Tuesday. The House passed the legislation with a final vote of 361-64, and heads next for President Obama's signature.

"I applaud Senator Dodd's leadership and tenacity in making sure this important legislation was successfully championed in both Chambers of Congress," stated Courtney. "As Connecticut's residents continue to struggle with the downturn in the economy, more and more individuals are being unfairly saddled by credit card companies' fees, rate hikes, and other practices that make it harder for families to make ends meet. The Credit Cardholders' Bill of Rights will significantly improve the way Connecticut residents are treated by credit card companies."

"For too long, the relationship between credit card companies and their members has been one-sided and abusive in many cases. Arbitrary rate increases, irresponsible surcharges, and confusing contracts have hurt even the most responsible of borrowers. When this bill becomes law, the legislation will finally level the playing field between the industry and the public."
